Uton is the musical project of Jani Hirvonen from Finland. Till now Jani has co-operate with many artists that are been active in the experimental music scene, including Tomutonttu, Alan Courtis (Reynols), Ø+yn, etc. His musical works has been published by many independent labels like Dekorder, Digitalis, Ikuisuus etc, most of them released as a limited numbers of copies.
Kähe+ is Uton’s latest album that is firstly released as a very limited cassette by the Mexican label Dept Tapes in October 2013. This album is including 30 short tracks that was recorded in Chantepie, France in May-June of 2013 and is dedicated to 30 Finnish words which didn’t yet exist. This edition is also including two lond run bonus tracks made in the same period of time compiled from the recycled material from previus album sessions.

Prolific Finnish free music weirdo, Jani Hirvonen takes us on a trip into his own peculiar sonic otherworld on this sprawling album. Across the course of the disc, all kinds of acoustic, electronic, zoological and possibly even ectoplasmic sound sources are chopped up, processed and thrown in the pot over a low heat and served up in a steady stream of digestible little portions. It’s a disorientating, surreal listen where one minute you have something like backward thumb pianos emerging from a swamp of staticky synth tones and the next you’re stumbling through what sounds like a jam session of shroomed-up Wiccans playing tambourine, keyboards and flute, with a tapir on vocals.

The sense of playfulness and moments of relative melodicism help set Uton apart from any po-faced noise experimentalists; although I imagine it could still sound like a tortuous noodlefest if you’re not in the mood. Nevertheless, listening to this is a deeply psychedelic experience. Overall, this sounds kinda like a cross between Morphogenesis and ex Royal Trux main man, Neil Haggerty at his most whacked-out. Uton (Jani Hirvonen) hails from Finland, but his work Kähe+ was recorded in France, was initially released in Mexico, and is now being re-released in Greece: a prime example of the international music climate. When first released, the album contained 30 short tracks, each based on a “non-existent Finnish word”; the reissue adds two much longer tracks formed from pieces of the same sessions, effectively doubling the length of the release. Like North, it also comes with a book, this one of paper collages. According to Uton, the music “follows the same rules” as the words, which “mutate” into unpredictable forms. New words enter languages and disappear; sometimes they re-appear with different meanings. This chameleon-like nature is reflected in some very odd tracks that seem less odd after repeated plays – the same thing that happens to new words as they grow more familiar to the tongue. Gurgles and neighs, bubbles and bells, all have their places, rubbing up against the synths and warbles, trumpet and tape loops like cats against legs or consonants against vowels. One grows curious about these tiny tracks, and by extension about the words: kösi, pössi, päerkö. By opening windows of sound, Uton opens windows of imagination as well. Most words seek to capture ideas; these words seek to spark them. As otherworldly as this music may sound, it now exists in this world, as does the vocabulary to describe it.(Richard Allen)

The label MoreMars from Greece released a re-release of a tape of Uton. The tape Kähe+ was released on cassette by the Mexican label Dept Tapes. Uton is a project of Jani Hirvonen from Finland. Kahe+ was recorded in Chantepie in France in May and June 2013. He based 30 short pieces at 30 Finnish words which doesn?t exist. I really like this kind of concepts to create new words. New words means progression, new meanings and the idea that something new has created or born. The first 30 tracks is like a cut-up story of William Burroughs. Moments are coming and disappear. The diversity in sounds and intensity make these first 30 short tracks very interesting. Two bonus tracks are added on the CD. This compositions are much longer and are experimental. The mix of noises, loops, electronics, drones and acoustic instruments are intense. These compositions are also recorded in France, but five months later. The long tracks give another dimension to the musical world of Uton. The music has more time to develop, but it is also developed with several elements and atmospheres. The first track is more noisy and chaotic. The second track has more diversity and suits more to the first 30 tracks. For me the first 30 tracks are the most interesting, because I like the idea and musically it is surprising, because the listener jumps to the one world to another. (JKH)

Δεν ξέρω αν είναι το πρώτο φινλανδικό weird, που τυπώνεται σε ελληνικό label (πιθανώς), αν και τούτο μικρή σημασία έχει… Όπως διαβάζω στο site τής more mars: «Uton αποκαλείται το μουσικό project του Φινλανδού Jani Hirvonen. Μέχρι σήμερα ο Hirvonen έχει συνεργαστεί με πολλούς καλλιτέχνες της πειραματικής σκηνής, όπως τους Tomutonttu, Alan Courtis (Reynols), Ø+yn κ.ά. Οι εγγραφές του έχουν τυπωθεί από διάφορα ανεξάρτητα labels (Dekorder, Digitalis, Ikuisuus κ.λπ.), συνήθως σε μικροποσότητες. Το “Kähe+” είχε κυκλοφορήσει για πρώτη φορά σε κασέτα από το μεξικάνικο label Dept Tapes, τον Οκτώβριο του ’13». Και από την κασέτα στο CD… Διακόσιες πενήντα κόπιες του “Kähe+” τυπώθηκαν από την more mars (οι πρώτες εκατό συνοδεύονται από βιβλίο) σε ωραία all-paper συσκευασία και με art cover που με παραπέμπει στις εκδόσεις της Fonal – εξάλλου και οι μουσικές του Uton παραπέμπουν σφόδρα στο ρεπερτόριο της φινλανδικής εταιρείας. Τι έχουμε λοιπόν εδώ; Ένα άλμπουμ που αποτελείται από 30 σύντομα στο χρόνο κομμάτια (το μεγαλύτερο διαρκεί 2:07) τα οποία, όπως αναφέρει ο ίδιος ο Hirvonen στο innersleeve, είναι αφιερωμένα σε 30 αντίστοιχες φινλανδικές λέξεις, που ακόμη δεν υπάρχουν. Λέξεις, οι οποίες μπορεί κάτι να θυμίζουν (στους Φινλανδούς προφανώς, γιατί σ’ εμάς τους Έλληνες μόνο το… “Kyrto” λέει κάτι, και ενδεχομένως το… “Kyrpos” και ουχί… Κύπρος), και που σε κάθε περίπτωση (πάντα κατά τα γραφόμενα του Hirvonen) προκαλούν και κάποιους αντίστοιχους(;) ήχους. Πέραν του… θεωρητικού background που δεν έχει και τόσο μεγάλη σημασία, εκείνο που πρέπει να ειπωθεί είναι πως οι μινιατούρες του Φινλανδού είναι πολύ ενδιαφέρουσες. Και γιατί διαρκούν ελάχιστα, και γιατί τα κενά μεταξύ τους είναι ανεπαίσθητα, και γιατί συνδυάζουν παλαιο-ηλεκτρονικά και ψυχεδελικά στοιχεία, μαζί με πειραματισμούς, θορύβους, field recordings κ.λπ. ερχόμενα, ως αίσθηση, από πολύ παλαιά, από τις ένδοξες μέρες του ’60 και τις ανάλογες εγγραφές των M.A. Numminen, Erkki Kurenniemi, The Sperm, Pekka Airaksinen κ.λπ.

Ο Jani Hirvonen, όμως, ξέρει να διαπρέπει και στην μεγάλη φόρμα, καθώς αποδεικνύεται… μεγάλος μάστορας στα δύο bonus tracks, που κλείνουν το CD, τα “Näkymättömässä Elämässä 1” (13:58) και “Näkymättömässä Elämässä 2” (14:38). Τα κομμάτια αυτά είναι ηχογραφημένα σε μια κωμόπολη της Βρετάνης (ΒΔ Γαλλία) τον Νοέμβριο του 2013, προέρχονται από… ανακυκλωμένο υλικό παλαιότερων εγγραφών του φινλανδού πειραματιστή, και επειδή έχουν εκτεταμένη διάρκεια δεν φείδονται καθόλου στην… ηχητική αποπλάνηση και το «χάσιμο». Έτσι, κι ενώ σ’ ένα πρώτο επίπεδο οι ήχοι φαίνεται να διαδέχονται ο ένας τον άλλον μέσα από ένα καθεστώς… ανύπαρκτης συνάφειας, στην πράξη εκείνο που ακούμε είναι ένα αποκαλυπτικότατο ψυχεδελικό ταξίδι, που θα μπορούσε να συγκριθεί στην ουσία και τη σημασία του με τα μεγάλα «ψυχεδελοχαμένα» άλμπουμ μιας άλλης εποχής… Τους Beat of the Earth ας πούμε, και άλλο τίποτα δεν λέω…(Φώντας Τρούσας)
