Passages… À Travers Le Temps offers a broad view of the evolving language of Octavian Nemescu, one of the central figures of Romanian contemporary music. Known for his interest in temporal perception and acoustic space, Nemescu developed a compositional style where structure often emerges from long-form processes, layered timbres, and subtle dynamic shifts.
The pieces in this collection illustrate his transition from late-1960s experimental modernism to his later “archetypal” and more contemplative works. Early compositions employ graphic elements, extended techniques, and electroacoustic textures, while later ones explore resonance, slow harmonic movement, and the relationship between silence and sound. Across these recordings, Nemescu’s focus remains consistent: an investigation of how music unfolds in time, and how listeners experience that unfolding.
This edition provides an accessible entry into Nemescu’s catalogue, highlighting both his historical importance and his distinct compositional voice within Eastern European avant-garde traditions.
