Description

Reissue(?) of this archival compilation from Goaty Tapes, drawn from rarely heard recordings made by Darrell DeVore.

The tape compiles rare and previously unheard recordings by Darrell DeVore, drawn from sessions in his vast repository spanning from the 1970s to the 1990s.

The material on this volume goes beyond DeVore’s solo “sound magic”: here he is joined by other voices and collaborators — for example, Untitled (Shards of Crystal) features Sally Davis and Krishna Bhatt, bringing an ethereal vocal dimension to the piece. In The Find Couple (Dr. UM’s Practice), János László contributes, adding a subtle layer to DeVore’s textured improvisations.

Musically, the tape explores imaginary ethnoscapes and multitracked polyrhythms, enriched by synthesizer atmospheres, off-kilter jazz toyings, and lingering experiments for piano and horn. DeVore’s ethos remains centered on acoustic resonance, spontaneous creation, and a kind of mystical ritual — his instruments often seem to play themselves, through wind, water, or simple physical interaction.

This release acts as both an archival document and a continuation of his creative universe — a world where DeVore’s deep fascination with sound meets communal, improvisatory encounters.
