TRAVIS LAWRENCE

My earliest memory of creating art was when I was a child, sitting in church with my mother.  My back turned facing the pulpit and I in my own little world drawing dinosaurs on the bulletin.

The work I create is usually a play of ideas.  Being all things are naturally only ideas and theories of what we think, it is our role as imaginative beings to take grasp of such things and redefine.  We claim to be scientific creatures, yet we are too afraid to get our feet wet.  We take observation from a distance, and someone else usually decides the final outcome of what we see.  What we fail to understand is that this reality is quite malleable. 

We are on the verge of a major transition as we approach a new Age.  Like those that came before, a new Age will bring forth a new form of thinking.  With this, our view of reality shifts into a new direction.  We as a collective set of beings must better prepare ourselves for such a transition.  We must loosen up and not view the world as such a concrete material substance, but begin to question and challenge its properties.

The first step in doing so is our approach to language and the use of words.  By tearing down the walls, language has confined us into, we open doors into a new understanding of everything around us.  Language, like reality itself is a system of symbols.  Look at everything around you and question its symbolic purpose.  Have fun with it.

Like the alchemist trying to discover the prime essence of matter, the artist should invoke the essence of thought.  Don't just sit and watch.  Stir the pot a little.  Take a sip.
